The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing pilots at American Airlines, has sounded the alarm on a concerning uptick in safety issues affecting flights. In a recent communication to its members, the union highlighted troubling trends, including incidents such as tools being left in aircraft wheel wells, ground collisions involving towed planes, and pressure to expedite aircraft return to service to maintain punctuality.

The APA’s message underscores a growing concern within the aviation industry, particularly in the wake of recent high-profile incidents. The spotlight intensified following the January 5 door plug blowout incident on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9, which raised questions about safety protocols and procedures. Additionally, United Airlines faced a series of incidents last month, prompting CEO Scott Kirby to issue a safety message to customers.

Amidst these developments, the APA’s safety committee emphasized the critical role of pilots in upholding safety standards. The union urged its members to report any issues promptly and resist any attempts to rush or intimidate them into compromising safety measures.

“While United Airlines is currently under public and government scrutiny, it could just as easily be American Airlines,” cautioned the APA’s safety committee in its message. The union emphasized the pivotal role of pilots as the final safeguard in the safety chain, underscoring the responsibility to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.

Responding to the concerns raised by the APA, American Airlines reiterated its commitment to safety as its top priority. The company emphasized the implementation of a robust safety program, guided by an industry-leading safety management system. American Airlines stated that its safety initiatives encompass collaborative efforts with regulatory bodies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and engagement with all unions, including the APA, to reinforce a strong safety culture.

As scrutiny on aviation safety intensifies, stakeholders across the industry are facing heightened scrutiny and accountability. The APA’s message serves as a reminder of the critical importance of maintaining rigorous safety standards to ensure the continued trust and confidence of passengers and stakeholders in the aviation sector.
